May 25th 2005 Release

Hello, Welcome to the SnakeBYTE readme file. Here you'll find interesting if not useful information about the SnakeByte
DSK image and ZIP-file you've just downloaded.

-------------------
First things first:
-------------------

** First things first, whats in the ZIPFILE? **

If you received the proper distribution package (http://www.turbo-2.com/apple/sb05.zip) you'll have the following:

>> SnakeByte - May 25-05.dsk (Dos 3.3 Version)
>> ProSBYTE.dsk (ProDOS Version)
>> SByte.pdb (Palm OS APPALM/PalmAPPLE emulator version)

>> sba.gif (animated GIF as used on www.turbo-2.com/apple)
>> Sbyte Source May 25-05.txt
>> Readme.txt (this File!)

The DSK and PDB files are emulator images. ** DSK ** is for use with many of the popular Apple II emulators out there.
** PDB ** is for use on a PALM OS handheld, running the APPALM or PalmAPPLE emulator.

------------------------
Whats on the DSK images?
------------------------

** SnakeBYTE - May 25-05.dsk (Dos 3.3) contains the following **
+------------------------------------------------------------------+

]CATALOG

DISK VOLUME 254

*A 066 SBX << SnakeBYTE eXecutable (Applesoft - //e version)

+------------------------------------------------------------------+

** And ProSBYTE.dsk (ProDOS version) contains the following **

]CAT

/SNAKE

DSK image notes:
----------------

** ProSBYTE.dsk is remarkably similar, only "SBX" is actually named "STARTUP" to make the game auto-run on
disk boot-up. In the ProDOS version, the Reset vector doesn't get messed with at all, as it seems to auto-
start a TRACE function when actioned under ProDOS. In the DOS 3.3 version, the reset vector gets changed
to auto-restart the game during normal execution. If you'd like to quit to the ( ] ) Applesoft prompt,
press CTRL-C and then press ESC. At this point (still under DOS 3.3) the RESET Vector is set to normal startup
values and the game exits. Sometimes this leaves DOS 3.3 disconnected. To remedy this after a CTRL-C >> Esc
exit, once you see the ( ] ) Applesoft prompt appear, press CTRL-Reset and it will properly re-hook DOS 3.3.

--------
Updates:
--------

Minor updates in this release include: "panic" sound increases as the green time bar on the right of the screen climbs.
The Inverse/Normal print routine has been replaced with a Inverse block cursor print routine.

The titlepage and intro pages of both DOS 3.3 and ProDOS versions have been updated to something more "spectacular"
than the '2003/04' versions. Also, I've finally added a "Game Over" screen, instead of just having the text at
the bottom of the display.

Also in this "May 25, 2005" release, I've integrated the t2.c presents screen into the actual "SBX" file,
to eliminate a superfluous "boot-file" Now, "SBX" contains the intro and game all in one "tidy" package.
As such "SBX" can be LOADed and SAVEd at will, without the necessity of anything more than an Applesoft
( ] ) prompt and mad typing skills. REMarks have mostly been removed now, so the source is incredibly
difficult to follow (even the Applesoft) but brings the filesize from 72 sectors down to 66 sectors.
Hopefully this will decrease load-time as well as increase execution speed somewhat slightly.

"SBX" is now 100% ProDOS compatible so it can be tossed onto a Hard-Disk or a CFFA "Hard-Disk" just as easily
as any regular 140K floppy. Load times vary accordingly, noted the author: "Wow, 66 Sectors in 1 second"
For HD install, use the version on the "ProSBYTE" dsk image as it doesn't monkey with the "RESET vector."

Hopefully you enjoy playing my SnakeByte, as it's been a labor of love bringing it from it's initial version written back
in November of 1991 to where it is today as we enjoy the year 2005.
